False dichotomy

A false dichotomy is an idea that’s presented with only two possible resolutions when in fact there are more. Or not. Typical usage involves offering people the one choice that the presenter prefers, and then something fucking ridiculous.

“We can either go to this party, or we can get pistol-whipped by Ottawans.”
“If you vote for this proposition, we’ll have better schools. If you don’t, you are actually Hitler.”
“You either admit Jeff Hornacek is superior, or you support date rape.”

Considering how dumb it often is to think an extreme situation is a viable option, it’s not unreasonable to say that false dichotomies are usually given when the argument is freakin’ weak sauce. It’s like, come on. You can do better than that. Or you can’t.
